Frequently Asked Questions

A Hand Therapist is an Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist that has undergone additional specialised training in assessment and treatment of the hand and upper limb.

No you do not need a referral, but if you have one please bring it along.

Your Hand Therapist will assess your injury or condition and then develop a tailored rehabilitation plan to ensure you achieve your individual goals. This may include taking measurements of your movement, teaching you exercises, providing a splint or helping you get back to your usual activities.

If you have any of the following, please bring them to your appointment:

  • A copy of your referral (if you have one)
  • Your hospital discharge summary or operation notes
  • Any medical reports you have
  • Your ACC number

You have the right to bring an advocate or support person to your appointment.

Yes you do. Consent gives your hand therapist permission to treat you and consent is a requirement of our governing bodies and ACC.  You may be provided with an electronic consent via email to fill out prior to your appointment.

Appointments are generally 30 to 40 minutes long. Your initial appointment may be a bit longer and your hand therapists can let you know how long it will be if you ask at the time.

Please see our fees tab for a rundown of our appointment fees. Not all appointments have a charge. If your injury is covered by ACC, ACC will fund a brace or splint if needed at no extra cost to you.

Please note ACC does not fund all clinic items and some therapy tools like taping and exercise tools and you will need to pay for yourself. Your hand therapist will always advise you of this and there is no pressure to self-fund therapy products.

The team at Active Hand Rehab aim to provide an outstanding level of care. We do this by trying to treat all our clients with equality, dignity and respect. Please let your Hand Therapist know if you have any specific needs or requirements at your initial consult.

If you feel we have somehow missed the mark with the above or excelled at it, please do not hesitate to contact the clinic Director by email: director@activehandrehab.co.nz and your feedback will be dealt with in confidence.
